Volker Schnebel is a type designer living and working in Hamburg, Germany. After he completed his studies of fine arts he learned the skill of type design from the ground up. Already in the 1980's he has digitized well known typeface libraries such as from Monotype, Berthold and ITC, amoung them well known typefaces such as Rockwell, Gill, Arial and Times New Roman. Just as early he occupied himself with the rasterizing of typefaces for the display on screens and printers and has like this acquired an extensive knowledge not only about the creative but also the technical side of typeface development.
In his time as Type Director at URW++ from 1995 to 2019 he developed, partly in cooperation with renown designers like G.G. Lange, Kurt Weidemann, Erik Spiekermann, Hans-Jürg Hunziker, Bernd Möllenstädt, Georg Salden and others, partly standalone with his own team Corporate Fonts for significant companies such as Siemens, Daimler, Deutsche Bahn, Blizzard, Cisco, General Motors, Swiss Re, ZF and many more.
Apart from this he has designed a number of very successful font families like Classica, Justus Pro, Schnebel Sans und Slab, which are freely available on all major platforms.
Since URW++ has been sold to Monotype in 2020, Schnebel is working independently and primarily together with the new founded company jpFonts by former CEO's of URW Peter Rosenfeld und Jürgen Willrodt. He is now mainly concerned with the development of new variable fonts (OTV), a new font-technology, that takes comprehensive knowlegde for manufacturing and sets new standards in creativity and technology.
